2011 AFCA Film Writing Awards
The aim of the Australian Film Critics Association Film Writing Awards is to raise the level of film culture in Australia by recognizing the work of Australian film critics and film commentators and to broaden public awareness of film as an art form and cultural artifact.
About the Awards
There are 4 Award categories each of which carries a cash prize. There is no entry fee but each entrant is permitted only 2 submissions each.
- Ivan Hutchinson Award for writing on Australian film. ($500)
- Award for writing on non-Australian film. ($500)
- Award for a review of an individual Australian film. ($200)
- Award for a review of an individual non-Australian film. ($200)

Criteria
In general, criteria includes research and effort expended in the preparation of the essay or review, quality of writing including insight, incisiveness and originality. The judges' decision will be final.
Conditions
- The Awards are open to any Australian resident, whether AFCA member or not, except for members of the judging panel or their relatives
- Previously published works may be submitted but no submission can have been published more than 12 months before closing date for entries (i.e., not published before 31 December, 2010).
- Any submission can be submitted to one category only, to be selected by the submitter
- No more than two submissions can be made by a single individual
- No submission should be more than 5,000 words, excluding footnotes (book extracts are permissible but do not submit entire books)
- For Categories 3 & 4, submissions must be no more than 1,000 words
- For Categories 3 & 4, films reviewed must have been theatrically released for the first time within 12 months of the closing date for entries (i.e., not released before 31 December, 2010)
- All submissions must be spell-checked and adhere to the AFCA style guide. Images may not be included in or with any submission
- All entries must be submitted electronically with a completed entry form that is available from the AFCA website (see below)
- AFCA will have the right to publish the winning entries. Subsequent re-publication of first time publications will require AFCA permission.
Style Guide
- Submission must be made as Word.doc (ie 1997 - 2003, NOT .docx or PDF) using Arial 12 pt or Times Roman 12 pt. with double line spacing
- All submissions must include a separate title and the author's name on the first page.
- All films referred to in either review or article must include the director’s name and the year of release (e.g. Klute, Alan J. Pakula, 1971) the first time they are mentioned.
- If non-English language film titles are referred to they must include their English language title if appropriate (e.g. Der Untergang/Downfall, Oliver Hirschbiegel, 2004) the first time they are mentioned.
- No images may be included with either review or article.
Entry and Award dates:
- November 01, 2011 - entries open
- December 31, 2011 - entries close
- February 2012 - winners announced in conjunction with AFCA FILM AWARDS
