Melbourne-based Afghan Musicologist Dr Ahmad Sarmast returns to Kabul after 15 years in exile to reopen  an old music school, closed down by Muslim extremists in 1992.   His dream is to revitalise Afghanistan's musical traditions, devastated by years of war and Taliban rule, by creating the country's first national institute of music.      Dr Sarmast also hopes to offer Kabul's street children and  orphans the   opportunity to study, in the belief that music might heal their trauma and offer them a better  future.

Festival Dates: 30 August, 2012 - 19 September, 2012
Participating Cinemas: Palace Cinema Como
The ninth Russian Resurrection Film Festival, the largest festival of Russian Cinema outside of Russia today, returns to screen at Palace Cinemas this September.

The beauty of Russian cinema is the broad range of quality films across different genres. The festival celebrates the revival of Russian cinema and this year’s program will include a variety of new dramas, animations, comedies, arthouse cinema, award winning classics and possibly Russia’s first ever zombie film.
Festival tradition dictates a retrospective and, this year to mark the bicentenary of the 1812 defeat of Napoleon, there are three stunning dramas and comedies.
Visiting actors and directors, Q&As and some of the best ever celebratory gala parties in each city are just some of the highlights for this vibrant celebration of Ruski culture.
Screening at: Chauvel Cinema, Palace Cinema Como, Palace Centro and Cinema Paradiso.

BUSAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2011
by Lesley Chow

28 05 2012
AFCA member Lesley Chow confirmed for the FIPRESCI jury at the 2012 Karlovy Vary Film Festival.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival June 29 – July 7, is ranked by FIAPF (Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films) among the most prestigious world film festivals and is considered the most important film event in Central and Eastern Europe. The festival premieres approx. 180 new, movies from all over the world, including up to 70 films; 60 of which are debuts.
This is a great opporunity for Lesley and AFCA to represent Australia at an international Film Festival.
"I've previously served on FIPRESCI juries in Busan and Hong Kong, and it's been a great opportunity to discuss films with other critics, as well as meet international directors and programmers.  Karlovy Vary is the major festival for new Central and Eastern European cinema, so I hope to come back with a long list of filmmakers not widely known in Australia"
